Gluten Free Southern Food: Smothered Hamburger Steaks

Often, the gluten free recipes that Michael and I tend to turn to are healthy. Grilled food, lots of veggies, and lowish on starches.

However, sometimes I just feel the need for a good ol' meal. The kind that my mom would make. One of my favorites was always smothered hamburger steaks. She'd make the hamburger steaks and make a "gravy" out cream of mushroom soup. She'd let it cook and serve it with green beans and mashed potatoes. Its what I served for dinner tonight, so I thought I'd share.



Smothered Hamburger Steaks

Ingredients:


For the steaks:
1lb ground hamburger meat
2 TB Worcestershire sauce
2 tp  garlic salt

For the gravy
2 TB corn starch
1 1/2 cup milk
2 TB butter
salt and pepper to taste


Put the hamburger meat into a bowl. Mix in the worcestershire sauce and garlic salt. Make sure it is thoroughly mixed. Separate meat into four sections and make 4 patties. Heat skillet to medium heat and cook patties.

While patties are cooking, heat small sauce pan to medium-low heat and add butter. While butter is melting, add salt and pepper (add to your preference. I am very generous because we like the spice). Once butter is completely melted, add corn starch. You should have a pasty concoction. Add milk, using a whisk mix thoroughly. Continue cooking on medium-low heat until mixture thickens.

Once the patties are cooked, remove from skillet and place them onto a paper towel. I find this is the best way to remove the majority of the grease. Drain grease from skillet. Put patties back into skillet and pour gravy on top. Cover and cook for 5-7 min on low heat.

Serves 4.

And its delicious with mashed potatoes made with just mashed potatoes and Chobani plain greek yogurt.
